General File of RAE

The RAE has several digital tools that facilitate research. The General File complements the information available in the dictionaries (DRAE, DPD, Autoridades, among others) with the lexicographic material used by the academics for the elaboration of the entries. It surprises the number of fiches with American lexicon collected in nineteenth-century dictionaries, that is, in the digests dedicated to examining the words of the viceregal territories. The cards have been digitized and are for free access.

This file has been formed from a very early date, although its period of maximum expansion is between 1930 and 1996, years in which the Academy faced the writing of the historical Dictionary in its two editions. In recent years, at the request of the Fundación Rafael Lapesa, the General File has been digitized in order to take advantage of this valuable information for the New Historical Dictionary of Spanish (NDHE).
