Intellectual history of
the viceroyalties of America
Director: Sonia V. Rose (Université de Toulouse)
The intellecutal history of the American viceroyalties is understood as part of the complex socio-political processes of the Hispanic Empire. On the one hand, it focuses on the different actors of viceregal intellectual life (viceroys, lawyers, bishops…), in their spaces (court, city, university…), and in the modalities of their relationships (patronage, patronage…). On the other hand, it examines intellectual productions, their mode of diffusion and circulation, their impact through polemics. Finally, the reception, although more difficult to inquire about sources, constitutes a final aspect of the investigation.
In methodological terms, this axis subscribes to the need for an imperial reading, promoted by Transatlantic History. Likewise, it is supported by tools such as the game of scales, the study of networks and the concept of trajectory.
