Para que den de comer a los muchachos, los dueños de los obrajes

Authors: Luis de Velasco y Castilla

This document is part of a set of provisions related to the viceregal administration printed in Lima by Antonio Ricardo. In this provision, the viceroy of Peru, Don Luis de Velasco, orders the corregidores who are in charge of administering a obraje within their districts, to pay the labor wages and feed the older and younger Indians so that they do not have a need to leave their work. In addition, it allows older women to meet the needs of workers, but prevents the entry of young women. It includes a proclamation and a declaration to the Indians of the Cercado.

The great demand for fabrics and clothing by the local market allowed the establishment of the obrajes, centers dedicated to textile manufacturing that proliferated in American territory since the 16th century. For Miriam Salas, the success or failure of a work was related to the management that took place in terms of treatment, food, housing and salary regulations, since the supply of labor and production depended on this. within the obrajes.
