The articles that are collected here were written between 1970 and 2005 and refer mainly to the letters of Pedro de Valdivia and the particular analysis of two of them. They also refer to various rhetorical and political aspects of Alonso de Ercilla’s La Araucana, among them the discussion of the unity of the poem, and the transtextual relationship between the magnificent works of Ercilla and Cervantes.  Finally, they refer to  “Cautiverio feliz, su edición reciente y el manuscrito de la Suma y Epílogo del mismo libro de Francisco Núñez de Pineda y Bascuñan y al estudio y compilación de sus poesías originales, traducciones y poesías de otros autores, desprendidas del libro”; and, to the testaments of Chileans on the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries.

Dr. Cedomil Goic establishes a rigorous analysis that involves a travelling through the letters of the Reino de Chile during three fundamental centuries in the history of the country, shaping a view of the Kingdom whose image emerges from the creation, the records and considerations about the continuous struggle to consolidate the Hispanization of a new society dominating the violent neighborhood and constant rebellions of an indomitable people in the south of the country, which marks what was called from the beginning “las guerras de Chile “ (the wars of Chile). This fights created our cultural imaginary about this country.»
