This book offers the most extensive study published so far on colonial epic poetry of the XVI century. This poetic genre of medieval tradition is renewed during the conquest with a repertoire of tropes and rhetorical motifs that assimilate the new American reality to the European poetic tradition, along with the inclusion of words from the indigenous languages of America. The poems also offer an imperial vision, a theme with the colonial expansion and sing, along with the actions occurred in the New World, events that took place in other regions of the Spanish empire, in Africa, Asia and Europe.

The work investigates the ontological statutes of the epic within the critical discourse from an approach that submits to review the preconceived ideas on the issue in the theoretical development of colonial studies.

Raúl Marrero-Fente is a professor of Hispanic Literature and Law at the University of Minnesota, and an associate member of the Grupo de Investigación Siglo de Oro (GRISO) of the University of Navarra and the Centro de Estudios de la América Colonial (CEAC) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is the author, editor or co-editor of fourteen books and sixty articles on Spanish and Latin-American literature, especially from the Golden Age and the colonial era.
