This book presents the first critical edition of this very interesting work entitled El Sumario de la Natural Historia de las Indias (Summary of the Indies Natural History) by  Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo, the first chronicler of the Indies. The work shows us the novelty that the American nature meant for the first Spanish explorers and in what way and with what words they approached their rich work description. The present text supposes a careful edition of the Summary from the princeps edition of 1526, taking into account its textual transmission until the moment. The work is accompanied by a detailed annotation, as well as illustrations by the author himself and the period of this key composition in the history of culture and science of the sixteenth century.
