The Universidad Real de Lima was the old name of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. In this document we see how Juan de Soto, rector of the university, proclaims a literary joust within the framework of the arrival of Francisco de Borja, viceroy of Peru between 1615 and 1621.
Be appreciative of the importance and value that was given to poetry and its relationship to political events. It should be noted that the arrival of a viceroy was an extremely important event in the city of Lima and that it was characterized by the large number of political and social events that adorned the city. It is possible to analyze the characteristics of this class of contests and of the poetic production of the time, which could be carried out in Portuguese, Spanish or Latin.
