Iconologia

Authors: Cesare Ripa

Iconology of the perugian Cesare Ripa is one of the most influential emblematic and iconographic books of the 17th century. Its first edition of 1593 was printed without illustrations. The Roman of 1603, here presented, appeared with more than 150 engravings whose representations and descriptions sought to illustrate poets, painters and sculptors, that is, to whom they saw in the mythology and symbols the raw material of their works. In sum, thanks to this treatise the artists and literates of the Modern Era had a compendium of figures ideal for the elaboration of allegories of all kinds.
