Constituciones de la provincia de san Antonio de los Charcas
This document was drawn up at the provincial chapter of the Franciscan order, held in the convent of San Francisco de la Ciudad de la Paz, with Fray Francisco de Herrera as commissary general. The constitutions were printed in Lima by Francisco del Canto. It is a set of regulations for the proper coexistence within the convent and for the formation of the religious. It consists of nine chapters that deal with subjects such as the instruction and reception of the novices, the divine office, prayer and silence, the keeping of poverty and the importance of suffrages for the deceased friars. It is an important text for the study of convent life in America.
The Franciscan province of San Antonio de Charcas was created in 1565 and its jurisdiction, in the current territory of Bolivia, included the temples of San Antonio de Potosí, Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de la Paz and Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Tarija; and the convents of the Purísima Concepción and La Recoleta in the city of Sucre.
